Servicing – FAQ’s
Do I have to have my car serviced by the main dealer?
Before 2003, you would invalidate the manufactures warranty if the car was serviced by a business that was not a ‘main dealer.’ Due to an important legislation change, that rule has become invalid. You, as the vehicle owner and the person who pays the bills can now use an independent and affordable garage like St Georges Coachworks. The key criteria is that we must use ‘genuine parts’ rather than ‘after market parts’ to ensure the warranty remains valid. We service, repair and maintain new and old cars alike without invalidating the manufacturers warranty.
What is the difference between a service and an MOT test?
An MOT is designed to check whether your vehicle is safe enough to drive on public roads. A service is designed to maintain the mechanical functions of a vehicle and keep it in good working order. Whilst an MOT is a legal requirement, a vehicle service is not. However, regular servicing is recommended in order to keep the vehicle in a roadworthy and safe condition, to prolong the life of your vehicle, reduce the risk of breakdown and give you peace of mind.
How often should I have my car serviced?
Most manufacturers and mechanics recommend that a car should be serviced every 12,000 miles or every 12 months – whichever happens first. This will help to keep the vehicle in a safe condition and good working order. Some vehicles come with a self-diagnostic system which tells you when your car is due for a service. Do not ignore any warning lights, even if your car hasn’t travelled the 12,000 miles.
There are several things you can do yourself in between services which will help keep your car in good working order. Things such as checking the tyre pressures, condition of wiper blades and the engine oil level. Our staff will be happy to show you how to do this at your next service.
Is a car service a legal requirement?
As already mentioned, a car service is not a legal requirement but rather a recommendation. Regular car servicing is very important as it will help to ensure the safety and prolong the life of your vehicle. It can also highlight wear and tear of parts before they evolve into bigger and more expensive issues or possibly become dangerous.
How long does a vehicle service take?
Most services take several hours to complete, but it largely depends on how many issues are found and how well your vehicle has been maintained prior to the service.
Can you do a service and MOT at the same time?
Yes we can and we actually recommend booking them together as it makes it much less likely you will forget either of them. It also saves you from making two journeys for both.
What do your need me to bring for my car service?
To get yourself and your car ready for the service, make sure you do the following.
Bring the car service book if you have one.
Ensure your car is clean. We recommend emptying your car of any rubbish and if possible, cleaning inside and out in order to make it easier for the technician working on your vehicle. Clear the back seat to allow access for the seat belt checks. It also helps if you empty your boot which then makes it easier for the mechanic to check the spare tyre. Most importantly, make sure you bring the socket for the locking wheel nuts.
